1940 May Family Reunion
See facsimile of the meeting minutes

For their 1940 reunion the May family returned to the home of Rev. David May near Nicholasville, Kentucky, where they had met ten years earlier. This reunion was the 12th held by the family, beginning with the first one in 1929. [In the written account the reunion is erroneously called the 11th. It would be correct to say that it had been eleven years since the first meeting.]

Anna Greenwade Taylor gives us this account:

"11 Annual May Reunion"

The Annual May Reunion, which is held on 4th Sunday of August each year, was held in year 1940 at home of Rev. & Mrs. David May at their beautiful old Colonial home on Nicholasville road between Lexington & Nicholasville. This was indeed an ideal setting for such a gathering - the beautiful old home surrounded by high maple trees & lovely blooming flowers. This was the second reunion held at this home & so many changes have taken place since the last meeting. Some have gone to their home beyond & I am sure if it is possible are looking down & sending their Blessing on the ones who are left.

Rev. & Mrs May, who are the two oldest descendants of the May family, are both 92 yr. old at the time of this meeting. They recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

All morning guests arrived ladended with baskets of good things to eat & at noon hour a bountiful lunch was served on the spacious lawn of home - Rev. May asking the Blessing.

In the afternoon Dr. W. B. Robinson of Mt. Sterling, president, presided over a brief business session at which time the minutes of the previous meeting were read & approved.

Rev. Wells, Pastor of the Nicholasville Methodist Church, read the Scripture & made a brief talk. Rev. Ragan of Nicholasville, Prof. Carl Northcutt & Prof. Cannion of Lexington made short addresses.

Approximately 205 persons present for the annual event.

Anna G. Taylor, Sec.

Family records show that Rev. and Mrs. David May were married in Salyersville, Ky. on 3 Nov. 1867, making 1940 the year of their 73rd - not their 75th - wedding anniversary. An interesting account of the celebration of their 70th anniversary was written in the Lexington Herald on 4 Nov 1937. At that time they had 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. They both were 92 years of age in 1939. Martha Prater May died on 17 Mar 1941 and David died on 3 Apr 1943.
