According to an account by May family genealogist, Tress May Francis, Solomon enlisted in the CSA at the age of seventeen and was engaged in some encounters for the cause until he was captured by Union soldiers. He remained a prisoner until he agreed to fight for the Union forces, which he did for the remainder of the war. He was in Company B, 39th Ky. Infantry, USA. For his service, he is said to have received a pension from both sides. He lived on Robinson Creek, where he was born, until 1890, when he moved to Coeburn, Va. He and Lucinda had no children.
